Evaluation of the mandibular canal detection algorithm

For validation of the mandibular canal detection algorithm cadaver studies were made. In each study, cadavers were CT-scanned before preparation and removal of the bone structure covering the nerve. Photographic pictures were then taken (a). Results of the detection algorithm were 3D visualized (e, f) and visually compared by overlaying them with the photographic pictures (b, c, and d).


In a second series cadavers where embedded in a resin and artificial landmarks added for registration purposes, then CT-scans taken. Next frontal cuts were made and the position of the mandibular canal identified and distances to the landmarks measured.
